Six Home Security Tips That Are Simpler Than You Think

A lot of people seem to have the idea that home security systems are extremely complicated and difficult to keep up with. And while true, there are some complicated things about them, there are also some really simple ways to stay secure when it comes to your home. That being said, let’s take a look at six home security tips that are simpler than you might think.

Don’t Leave a Key Outside

This is a very common mistake, and our tip is to not do it. Yes, we’re all well aware of all the times you’ve forgotten to take a key with you and you got locked outside your home. We know it was frustrating to wait for your partner to come back home from work and let you in. But trust us, leaving a key hidden outside is the last thing you want to do.

To begin with, there’s a pretty big chance of a thief thinking that you’ve done that. And if you have, they’ll check everywhere that’s a potential hiding spot. If you think they won’t find it, and get access to your home, you’re wrong.

A much better option would be to get yourself a smart lock. A smart lock will let you get in with a fingerprint or a PIN code, and you won’t need to carry around a key anymore. It’s a simple device that’s a piece of cake to install but does make a difference.

Use Plants to Your Advantage

This is something many homeowners seem to forget, but it’s a key thing, especially if you’re living in a house. Your yard very likely has a lot of bushes and plants, as well as hedges, and you should use them to your advantage.

For example, you could use them to keep windows from being an easy access item. If a burglar wants to get inside through your window, they’d have to climb through bushes, which is something they’ll avoid. However, make sure they’re trimmed, so you aren’t giving those thieves easy ways to hide throughout your yard while they’re casing the place.

Leave Your Lights On

Yes, turning your lights off when you leave the house is a great thing when you want to lower your electricity bills a bit. However, some thieves will consider this an invitation to break inside your home. When you’re away from home for an extended period of time, many burglars will assume that you aren’t there because of the lights usage, or lack thereof.

You might want to leave a few lights on around the house, especially in parts of the property that are somewhat unfrequented. And if you want to be able to control the lights when you aren’t at home, you might want to take a look at smart lighting or timers on your lights, a combination might come in handy.

Don’t Boast About Your Travels

All of us are guilty of getting to our vacation spot and immediately posting a picture on Instagram titled “vacation mode: on”. But you know what that does? It tells any potential thieves that are seeing your feed that you’ll be away from home for a week and makes your home a prime target. We know that you want to share the beautiful pictures of your vacation, but hold off until you get home. Then, post all you want.

Put Up Warning Signs

Even though you might not have a comprehensive security system in your home, you could still put up warning signs in your yard. Something like “Property Under Surveillance” does go a long way towards making a thief think twice about getting inside your home, and it’s a pretty effective deterrent.

Get Actual Surveillance

Yes, this is also simpler than you might think. When people think of security, the first thing that springs to mind is a complicated system that has cameras, storage devices, sensors, etc. And even though this is true for a comprehensive system, you don’t have to go that far.

Covering the basics by having a few surveillance cameras is actually a great place to start. Down the road, if you’d like a bit more security, you could go ahead and add things such as motion sensors, smart lighting, video doorbells, and a smart lock. You can check our guide on how to use CamHi for PC or ZSight for PC to manage your surveillance devices.

If you do opt for this, make sure you have good, high-quality cameras that record at least 1080p video. You should cover your front door, as well as any rooms that are important inside. However, make sure you don’t break the reasonable expectation of privacy people in your home have and don’t put cameras in rooms such as the bedrooms and bathrooms.
